Partial lunar eclipse visible across Netherlands next Friday

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible across much of the Netherlands next Friday, with around 93% of the Moon entering Earth’s darkest shadow.

The eclipse is scheduled to begin at 3:23 a.m. and reach its peak at 6:14 a.m.

Because the Moon sets shortly after reaching its maximum, the remainder of the event, which runs until 9:04 a.m., cannot be seen from the country.

Viewing conditions across the country

Visibility will depend on cloud cover, and the Moon’s low position in the west-southwestern sky may make viewing difficult in urban areas where buildings obstruct the horizon.

Viewing is best from open fields away from city structures or elevated spots such as hills and rooftops.

The eclipse is 100% safe to watch with the naked eye without specialized protective filters, unlike the solar eclipse on August 12.

Color changes and future dates

As 93% of the Moon enters the umbra, the covered portion will turn from bright white to a deep reddish-orange or copper shade.

This color shift happens because the atmosphere scatters shorter blue wavelengths while bending longer red wavelengths into Earth’s shadow.

If clouds block the view, the next lunar events visible from the Netherlands will be a faint penumbral eclipse on February 20, 2027, and a total lunar eclipse on December 31, 2028.
