Schiphol closes Buitenveldertbaan runway for eight days

The Buitenveldertbaan runway at Schiphol Airport is closing for eight days starting on Monday due to scheduled maintenance.

The work is part of the airport’s annual upkeep, covering inspections of the asphalt, runway markings and electrical systems.

Air traffic will be rerouted to other runways while the maintenance takes place, which could lead to increased noise in some areas.

Alternative routes across the region

The airport will use the Kaagbaan as an alternative runway for departures, while arriving flights can land on the Schiphol-Oostbaan.

The Buitenveldertbaan is typically used during strong westerly winds so that planes can land into the wind.

The Kaagbaan is a preferred runway that air traffic controllers prioritise because it generates less disturbance overall.

Extra flights on the Kaagbaan may be noticeable in Haarlemmermeer, with approaching planes routed via Katwijk, Noordwijk, Abbenes and Nieuw-Vennep.

Noise impact on Amsterdam

Additional traffic on the Schiphol-Oostbaan will be felt primarily in Amsterdam and the Zaanstreek.

The landing approach route for the Schiphol-Oostbaan passes over the centre of Amsterdam.

Departures will mostly fly over Amstelveen, Amsterdam-Zuidoost and the Gooi, with a smaller share passing over Amsterdam, the Zaanstreek and Haarlem.
