A nationwide public transport strike planned for 9 September is set to halt GVB services across Amsterdam, and the district of Noord is now preparing for its ferry crews to join the walkout as well.
The ferries across the IJ are the free, round-the-clock link between Noord and the city centre for people on foot and on bikes.
With metros, trams and buses already expected to stand still, a ferry stoppage would close the last everyday connection for anyone not willing to ride the long way round over the ring road.
Roughly 112,500 people live in the district. Reports describe Noord as virtually unreachable by public transport for the duration of the strike, and the district administration is taking that into account in its planning for the day.
Which services stop, and for how many hours, has not been announced. The date is fixed: 9 September.
Anyone who crosses the IJ that day should plan on making other arrangements.
