Launch of the Kattenburg Atlas, with VR walks along the old wall
The launch of two projects about Kattenburg, one of the islands in Amsterdam's eastern harbour area: an atlas and a collection of memories presented in virtual reality. Kattenburg grew up as a working-class neighbourhood closely tied to shipbuilding, the docks and the navy, with a close-knit community that many former residents still remember fondly. Much of the old housing was demolished and the area redeveloped in the decades after the war, so much of that earlier Kattenburg now survives mainly in stories, photographs and maps. An atlas and VR recordings give that history a new form, letting visitors see and hear how the neighbourhood used to be. The Marineterrein next door, a former naval base that is now open to the public, makes a fitting place to present a project rooted in the island's maritime past.
