How to choose an accountant in Amsterdam
Start with your business structure, not price. A ZZP freelancer's paperwork is usually handled well by a boekhouder (bookkeeper) or an online bookkeeping platform, while a BV is legally required to file annual accounts and needs a professional qualified to sign off on them.
In the Netherlands, "accountant" is a protected title: only an AA (Accountant-Administratieconsulent) or RA (Registeraccountant) registered with the NBA, the Dutch institute of chartered accountants, may use it. "Boekhouder" carries no such protection, so anyone can use the word regardless of training; checking for NOAB membership, the Dutch bookkeepers' association, is a more useful quality signal than the title itself. Our ZZP accountants guide for freelancers covers this split in more detail.
Before comparing fees, ask exactly what is included: VAT (BTW) returns, payroll administration (loonaangifte), and the annual report (jaarrekening) are often priced separately rather than bundled. If your accounting relationship is really about unpaid client invoices rather than bookkeeping, that is a job for one of the debt collection agencies in Amsterdam, not your accountant.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between an accountant and a bookkeeper in the Netherlands?
An accountant (AA or RA) holds a legally protected title granted by the NBA and is bound by formal rules of conduct and continuing education. A bookkeeper, or boekhouder, has no protected title or mandatory qualification, so quality varies more; membership of NOAB, the Dutch bookkeepers' association, is a useful check. Bookkeepers typically handle day-to-day admin like invoicing and VAT filings, while accountants are needed for statutory sign-off on a BV's annual accounts.
Do I need an accountant if I am a ZZP freelancer, or is a bookkeeper enough?
Most ZZP'ers manage with a bookkeeper or an online bookkeeping platform for routine VAT filings and income tax, without needing an NBA-registered accountant. Our Amsterdam ZZP accountants guide walks through when that changes, such as higher revenue or more complex EU sales. A short conversation with a bookkeeper is usually enough to find out which category you fall into.
What does a Dutch accountant actually do beyond filing taxes?
Much of the work is compliance rather than tax minimization: making sure BTW (VAT) returns go in on time, payroll wage filings (loonaangifte) are correct, and a BV's jaarrekening is prepared properly. The Belastingdienst, the Dutch tax office, uses automated checks that flag unusual patterns in filings, so a large part of an accountant's value is keeping a business inside those lines. How much does an accountant or bookkeeper cost in Amsterdam?
Reported market rates put ZZP bookkeeping and accounting support roughly in the €70 to €160 a month range, with bookkeepers also billing by the hour at around €30 to €70. Small BV companies are commonly quoted higher monthly fees plus a separate charge for the annual report, since that filing takes extra work. These figures come from general Dutch market sources rather than Amsterdam-specific data, so ask any firm you contact for a written quote covering exactly what is included before comparing.
Is a Dutch BV required to have an accountant?
Yes: a BV must file an annual jaarrekening, and that filing needs sign-off from a qualified professional rather than an unregistered bookkeeper. Smaller BVs typically work with an AA accountant, while larger companies approaching statutory audit thresholds may need an RA. A bookkeeper can still handle the day-to-day administration in between.
Should I look for an English-speaking accountant as an expat in Amsterdam?
It is worth prioritizing, since Dutch tax rules around VAT, payroll, and filings are specific enough that miscommunication with a Dutch-only firm can cause real problems with the Belastingdienst. Expat-specific matters, such as the 30% ruling, are also easier to navigate with a firm used to advising international clients.
