What is the difference between tapas and pintxos?

Tapas are Spanish small plates ordered off a menu and shared around the table. Pintxos, the Basque country's version, are bite-sized snacks that usually sit on a slice of bread on the bar; diners point at what they want, and the empty cocktail sticks left on the plate at the end are counted to work out the bill.

Is a tapas restaurant a good choice for a first date?

Tapas suits a first date well because ordering a few small dishes to share keeps things relaxed rather than committing to one large plate each. The same format also works for a quick drink and a bite after work or a bigger group feast, so pick a venue by the mood wanted rather than by the menu alone.

What should be ordered to judge whether a tapas kitchen is any good?

Tortilla de patatas, the classic Spanish potato omelet, is a reliable benchmark: it should arrive soft and freshly made, not pre-sliced and sitting under a heat lamp. Patatas bravas and jamón Ibérico are two other standards worth ordering early to gauge a kitchen before committing to the rest of the menu.

How can diners tell if a Spanish restaurant in Amsterdam is the real thing?

One concrete signal exists: the Royal Academy of Gastronomy of Spain and ICEX Foods and Wines from Spain award an official "Restaurants from Spain" quality label, and only a small number of restaurants in the Netherlands currently hold it. Beyond that, a Spanish-led kitchen and classics that taste like the originals - tortilla, croquetas, gambas - rather than adaptations are the more everyday indicators.

Is Amsterdam actually known for its tapas scene?

Not especially: food writers who cover the city consistently note that Amsterdam is not awash with good tapas the way Spanish cities are. That makes it a scene worth navigating by specific kitchen rather than by neighborhood alone.

Are Amsterdam's tapas restaurants suited to large groups?

It varies by venue. Some are built around big shared terraces and group-friendly seating, while others occupy small, canal-house-sized rooms better suited to couples or two or three people, so checking a listing's photos or calling ahead is the fastest way to confirm which type of space applies before booking a bigger table.
