Beyond Time and Space with Ukiyo-e, a CAMERA JAPAN screening
Japanese woodblock prints are the subject of this screening, part of the CAMERA JAPAN festival programme at LAB111. Ukiyo-e, often translated as pictures of the floating world, flourished in the Edo period and showed actors, courtesans, landscapes and everyday city life in Edo. Artists such as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro became famous far beyond Japan, and their work deeply influenced European painters, including Van Gogh. CAMERA JAPAN has brought Japanese film and culture to audiences in the Netherlands for many years, mixing new releases with documentaries and special programmes. LAB111, an independent cinema in Amsterdam West, is a fitting place for a festival film. The screening should interest film lovers as well as anyone drawn to Japanese art and printmaking.
