Edvard Grieg's incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt draws deeply from Norwegian folk traditions and has been reimagined here by Hardanger virtuoso Ragnhild Hemsing, whose arrangement foregrounds the distinctive nasal timbre of the Hardanger fiddle at the heart of Scandinavian folk expression. The Peer Gynt suite showcases Grieg's gift for capturing landscape and character through orchestral colour. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings offers a different kind of romance, steeped in Russian lyricism and the composer's gift for soaring melodic lines. The pairing of Norwegian folk-influenced storytelling with Russian romantic warmth creates a rich evening of orchestral music.
