Children aged five and over are invited to a reading workshop in the Jip en Janneke children's corner of the OBA library at Roelof Hartplein. A voorleesatelier combines reading a story aloud with a creative activity based on the book, so children can respond to what they have heard in their own way. Being read to at this age builds vocabulary, listening skills and a love of books that lasts well beyond primary school. The Amsterdam public library runs activities like this across its branches to make reading a shared and sociable pleasure. The children's corner, named after Annie M.G. Schmidt's much-loved pair of characters, is a fitting spot for it.
