Rechten van de Bij: speak up for bees at your city council

Bees and other pollinators have no voice in local politics, and this workshop looks at how residents can speak up for them at their own municipal council. It grows out of the Rechten van de Bij initiative, which links the decline of pollinators to the wider rights of nature movement, the idea that ecosystems and species can be given legal standing rather than treated only as resources. Participants can expect to explore how local government works, where decisions on green space, planting, mowing and pesticide use are made, and how a citizen can raise these issues effectively. The setting fits the subject: De Ceuvel in Amsterdam Noord is a former shipyard site turned into a circular, sustainable workplace, with houseboat offices set among plants chosen to help clean polluted soil. The workshop title is in Dutch, so the session is likely to be held in Dutch. It is for anyone who cares about urban nature and wants practical ways to turn that concern into action at a local level.
