Visitors search the historic Waag building for better alternatives to the apps and platforms that shape daily life, from messaging to search. Instagram, WhatsApp and Google are hard to avoid, but open source software, privacy-friendly services and tools run in the public interest do exist, and this scavenger hunt puts them in front of you. The event is part of Waag Open, the regular open evening at Waag Futurelab, which has researched technology and society since the 1990s. The setting is the fifteenth-century former weigh house on the Nieuwmarkt, one of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam. Anyone curious about taking back some control over their digital life will leave with practical ideas to try.
