More than 70 reports of anti-LGBTQI+ discrimination were submitted during the opening weekend of WorldPride in Amsterdam.

The elevated number of incidents was recorded by RITA Community, an initiative supported by the municipality of Amsterdam and local discrimination reporting services.

Organizations involved in tracking these reports typically receive only a few notices per day under normal circumstances.

However, the influx over the first weekend showed a noticeable increase as large crowds gathered for citywide events.

Incidents reported on public transit

Many of those targeted were harassed while traveling to or from major gatherings across the city.

Specific incidents were reported by visitors heading to the Milkshake Festival in Westerpark and the Pride Walk in the city center.

A significant portion of the verbal and physical harassment occurred on public transit lines and at railway stations.

Train stations outside of Amsterdam also saw incidents involving visitors traveling into the capital for the festivities.

Increased awareness and reporting

Representatives from RITA Community noted that heightened visibility around reporting channels during the festival may have encouraged more people to speak up.

At the same time, advocacy groups expressed concern that the formal reports likely represent only a small fraction of the total incidents that occurred.

WorldPride has brought heightened attention and extra visitors to the capital, leading to increased safety monitoring throughout the festival period.

Local authorities and transport operators continue to urge anyone experiencing or witnessing harassment to notify staff or submit an official report.
