Dutch household stock investments surge to record high

Dutch households that invest have seen substantial gains from rising share prices this year. According to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the total value of their holdings jumped by 12 percent in the second quarter compared to the opening months of 2026.

That marks the largest quarterly increase recorded since the central bank began tracking the data in 2018. The total value of household investments reached approximately 234.2 billion euros by the middle of the year, setting a new all-time high.

While households purchased additional shares during this period, DNB noted that rising market valuations were the primary driver behind the overall portfolio growth.

A rush on SpaceX shares

American aerospace firm SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, drew considerable attention from Dutch retail investors when it went public in June. Dutch households purchased 169 million euros worth of shares during its debut month.

DNB reported that this was the highest amount ever invested by Dutch households during a company’s market introduction month. The company, which is planning projects such as data centers in space, saw rapid turnover in its stock.

Many investors quickly offloaded their positions to lock in profits. By the end of the launch month, the total value of SpaceX shares held in the Netherlands had dropped to 100 million euros, and the stock’s initial price gains have since largely evaporated.

New arrivals in Amsterdam

Domestically, investors continued to focus on companies listed on the Amsterdam exchange, such as semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML. Several newcomers to the exchange also attracted retail interest.

Ice cream producer Magnum debuted on the Amsterdam stock market following its spin-off from Unilever. Czech defense company CSG also joined the market and drew investments from Dutch households.

Out of roughly 8.4 million households in the Netherlands, around 2.2 million currently invest money, typically managing their portfolios through banks or online brokerages.

Traditional savings remain far more common across the country. Total funds held in Dutch savings and payment accounts stand at 666 billion euros, making cash deposits nearly three times as large as retail investment holdings.
