Residents across Amsterdam’s Staatsliedenbuurt are mourning the death of Emad, the beloved proprietor behind local institution snackbar Onze Hanny.
Emad, who ran the corner shop on Van der Hoopstraat for three decades, passed away recently at age 66 while visiting family in his native Egypt.
Known affectionately to neighborhood regulars as Hanny or “Meneer Oei Oei,” he was widely appreciated for his quiet kindness and dedicated work ethic.
A neighborhood staple for thirty years
Emad took over the fry shop thirty years ago, keeping the original name chosen by the previous owner in honor of his wife.
Over the decades, Onze Hanny built a dedicated following for its classic Dutch snack bar menu and late-night hours.
The interior remained deliberately unchanged over the years, keeping its suspended ceiling, menu photos, and candy counter intact.
The kitchen gained wider recognition for serving traditional fare like the increasingly rare huzarenslaatje along with popular staples like kapsalon.
Family to continue running the shop
Co-worker Yasser, who worked alongside Emad behind the counter for 27 years, confirmed the sad news to neighborhood regulars this week.
Following Emad’s passing, the snackbar will remain open and pass to his two sons, who plan to maintain the shop’s operations.
A painted mural of Emad’s portrait inside the shop is also set to be restored by the original local artist to honor his memory.
