Dutch bank bunq will not be launching banking services in the United States anytime soon following a decision by American regulators.

seasonal regulatory feedback from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency resulted in the rejection of the bank’s application for a US national banking charter.

Regulatory concerns over expansion

The regulator cited significant concerns regarding supervision and compliance systems as the main reasons for turning down the request.

Authorities requested a more comprehensive plan aimed specifically at the American market, alongside evidence of greater experience with the financial products the company intends to launch abroad.

The OCC also sought further clarity regarding the capital structure supporting the Dutch firm’s US operations.

Future plans and industry context

A spokesperson for the bank stated that the company understands the regulatory feedback and plans to refine its business model before submitting a new application when ready.

The company had previously secured an American broker-dealer license as a preliminary step toward building out its operations in North America.

The decision follows a similar rejection for international transfer company Wise, signaling that US officials maintain strict standards for international fintech applicants regarding governance, compliance, and capital planning.
