Prime Minister Rob Jetten joined the official boat procession through the canals of Amsterdam on Saturday afternoon, making him the first sitting Dutch premier to sail in the event.

The appearance took place as part of the WorldPride celebrations hosted in the capital this year, which drew thousands of spectators to the city center.

Embarking at the Maritime Museum

Mayor Femke Halsema greeted Jetten at the Het Scheepvaartmuseum near Oosterdok, which served as the primary departure area for the parade participants.

Jetten boarded a small organizational vessel alongside Pride director Lucien Spee to travel a portion of the route.

After completing several loops on the Amstel river near the municipal offices at the Stopera, the main procession of roughly 80 decorated boats continued along the Prinsengracht.

Reflecting on safety and acceptance

Speaking to press during the event, Jetten called the turnout a display of freedom while emphasizing that public advocacy remains essential for the community.

He noted recent incidents abroad and pointed out that safety and social acceptance for LGBTQIA+ individuals continue to face pressure both internationally and within the Netherlands.

The prime minister also referenced his personal experiences with online harassment and threats linked to his sexual orientation.

Cabinet commitments and local festivities

Prior to setting sail, Jetten addressed young people directly, encouraging them to be open about their identities despite the challenges involved.

He confirmed that the government plans to move forward with measures outlined in the Rainbow Election Agreement, including new legislative proposals aimed at strengthening rights.

The national budget includes 35 million euros targeted at safety initiatives, police cooperation in major urban centers, and educational programs.

Celebrations across the city

Spectators gathered early along the banks of the canals to watch the floats pass through the historic center.

Street parties and cultural events took place across downtown locations, including the area around Reguliersdwarsstraat, the Zeedijk, and Dam Square.

Local authorities maintained high security measures throughout the day, ensuring the festivities ran smoothly across the city.
