International residents in the Netherlands who lose their jobs now have six months to find a new position before risking their right to stay. The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) doubled the search window from the previous three-month allowance.
This policy change applies to foreign workers holding specific permits, such as the highly skilled migrant visa, single permits, EU Blue Cards, and research roles. However, individuals must have held their work permit for at least two years to qualify for the extended period.
Changes to permit processing times
The updated rules stem from European Directive 2024/1233 on single permits. Under the regulations, the search period must still fit within the original validity timeframe of the worker’s current residence permit.
Several other procedural timelines have also changed. The immigration agency now has authority to extend the standard 90-day decision period for initial work permit applications by up to 30 additional days.
Impact on international professionals
For international professionals moving between employers, the standard processing duration is set at 45 days, though EU Blue Card transfers carry a shorter 30-day window.
If a worker cannot access the full six-month search window due to permit expiration, extensions may be granted under specific conditions.
These adjustments provide additional security for international residents in major employment hubs like Amsterdam, where corporate recruitment and career transitions frequently occur within tech and finance sectors.
