A new language-learning app called PraatMet has launched to help non-native speakers practice spoken Dutch in daily life.

International residents in the Netherlands frequently experience locals switching to English as soon as they hear an accent, which makes gaining real-world speaking practice difficult.

Simulated daily scenarios

The app uses artificial intelligence to act as an interactive conversation partner that responds in real-time to vocal input.

Users can select everyday scenarios such as ordering food, handling housing matters, or scheduling medical appointments, as well as initiating open-ended conversations.

The system adapts to the user’s proficiency level from beginner to advanced, automatically adjusting the speech rate and vocabulary complexity based on how the conversation progresses.

Feedback and availability

After each session, the software generates a summary detailing performance and highlighting areas for improvement, including word choice and grammar corrections.

PraatMet offers a free tier that includes ten minutes of conversation practice each month, with expanded usage available through paid monthly subscriptions.
