Waterschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht is lifting the water extraction ban for Amsterdam and the surrounding area. Starting at 06:00 on Wednesday 26 August, surface water may once again be used to spray gardens, sports pitches, and farmland.
The water board introduced the restriction nearly two weeks ago due to prolonged drought and high temperatures. Regular rainfall over the past week has helped water levels stabilise, and more rain is forecast.
Lower temperatures and shorter days also contributed to the decision by reducing evaporation. Nature, agriculture, and sports facilities also naturally require less water in late summer.
Ongoing drought concerns
Despite lifting the ban, the water board stated that drought remains an ongoing concern. Substantial rain is still required to replenish surface water and groundwater supplies.
The authority warned that climate change will cause more frequent prolonged dry periods and heavy downpours, adding that it is preparing for extreme weather this autumn.
