The municipality is carrying out major repairs on the walking path running alongside De Tuinen van Westerpark. The section forms part of the Brettenpad route.

The footpath has suffered from years without maintenance, leaving the asphalt damaged by tree roots, ground subsidence, rainwater, and frost. In some places the surface has disappeared entirely, posing a tripping hazard for walkers.

Contractors will strip away the old surface completely before laying new asphalt. The verges alongside the path will also be restored, bicycle stairs will be installed at an entrance to the allotment gardens, and invasive Japanese knotweed will be removed.

Phased closures and detour routes

Work begins on 7 September, when the footpath will be closed and pedestrians will share the adjacent cycle path.

From 12 October through 31 October, the entire Brettenpad between Molenwerf and Westergas will close to both cyclists and pedestrians.

During the late October closure, through traffic will be diverted via Haarlemmerweg or via Sloterdijkerweg and Sloterdijkerpad.
