A bicycle coffee cart named Viet Drip has marked its second anniversary serving traditional Vietnamese brews in Amsterdam. The mobile business operates on weekends in Oosterpark, setting up red plastic stools for customers between 10:30 and 16:30.
Founder Matko Kmezić, a 28-year-old Croatian who speaks Vietnamese, handles between 50 and 150 orders a day depending on the season. Starting with a cart allowed him to test the market directly without the high capital investment required for a brick-and-mortar cafe.
Beans roasted in the Netherlands
Kmezić imports green Robusta beans directly from Vietnam and roasts them himself in the Netherlands. He avoids additives and artificial flavourings, aiming to highlight the naturally bold bitterness and high caffeine content of the variety.
His interest in the drink began eight years ago during a motorbike trip in Vietnam, when he bought a black coffee served in a plastic bag from a street vendor. He later learned more about the language and food through his Vietnamese fiancée and time spent working in the country.
Condensed milk and salted coffee
The cart serves traditional favourites including iced black coffee, iced coffee with condensed milk, and variants with coconut or egg. Salted coffee and iced coffee with condensed milk are the two most popular orders on the menu.
Kmezić plans to keep the operation focused on the mobile cart and open seating, giving park visitors a place to sit, drink Robusta and talk.
