Recycled-material pedestrian bridge hoisted into place in Noord

A new bicycle and pedestrian bridge was lifted into place over the Tolhuiskanaal in Amsterdam-Noord this week.

The crossing connects Asterweg with Grasweg in the developing Buiksloterham neighbourhood, where growing traffic prompted the need for a direct route across the water.

Built from reused city materials

The bridge was constructed entirely using recycled materials sourced from across Amsterdam, according to project manager Reinier van der Weij.

Its deck was built from an old quay at the NDSM wharf, several support beams were taken from railway tracks near Sloterdijk, and construction parts came from an old bridge on Cruquiuskade.

Opening scheduled before next summer

Although the span is now in place, cyclists and pedestrians will have to wait several months before crossing it.

Crews must first connect the bridge to the surrounding path network, with an opening planned before the summer of 2027.
