Amsterdam Marathon

Ethiopian runner Lemi Berhanu won the 51st Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday 18 October, crossing the line in the Olympic Stadium in 2:03:33, just three seconds outside the course record.

The 32-year-old pulled away from Kenyan Nicholas Kipkorir shortly after the 40-kilometre mark.

A wet and cold men’s race

A big lead group stayed together for 30 kilometres until a surge by Kenyan Justus Kangogo left seven men at the front by 35 kilometres.

When Kipkorir pushed on after 38 kilometres, only Berhanu could follow.

Last year’s winner, Kenyan Geofry Kipchumba, lost touch at halfway and dropped out soon after.

Course record in the women’s race

Ethiopian Buze Diriba set a women’s course record of 2:16:12, beating the time of last year’s winner Anyalem Desta.

Meseret Belete was third in 2:18:06, completing an all-Ethiopian podium.

Fastest Dutch runners

Mikky Keetels, 27, was the fastest Dutch woman in 14th place with a personal best of 2:30:36.

Noah Schutte, 31, from Leiden was the fastest Dutch man, finishing 25th in 2:09:35, while Khalid Choukoud, 40, set a Dutch over-40 record of 2:14:10.
