Schiphol’s electronic passport gates are working again after an IT fault put them all out of action on Sunday 18 October, the Marechaussee says.
A spokesperson says it was not a cyberattack, and the cause is still being investigated.
All 78 gates down
The outage began at 06:00, and with all 78 gates out of use, every traveller had to be checked by hand.
The Marechaussee brought in extra officers so that every desk was staffed.
Long queues formed in the arrival and departure halls, which were already busy with the autumn holiday.
According to a spokesperson, people waited an hour on average and some as long as 90 minutes.
Hundreds missed flights
Schiphol says several hundred people missed their flight because of the fault.
KLM says it held flights for passengers wherever possible, while Transavia said it would be extra flexible with rebooking.
The queues were expected to shorten quickly once the gates were back.
The eGates can be used by travellers aged 14 and over from the EU, the Schengen area, the UK, the US and South Korea, among others, who scan their passport and look into a camera.
