Most Amsterdammers get by happily without a car – the bike and the tram see to that – but for trips beyond the ring road, family life or work, owning one still makes sense.
If you have decided to buy, the Dutch market has its own rules worth learning first.
New versus used
The first choice is new or used (tweedehands).
New cars come from official brand dealerships, with warranties and the latest efficiency, but they depreciate quickly the moment they leave the forecourt.

You will also need Dutch car insurance, which is legally required before you drive, and to budget for road tax (wegenbelasting) and the periodic APK safety inspection that older cars must pass.

The real cost of ownership
The sticker price is only the start.
Amsterdam is one of the most expensive cities in the country to keep a car, thanks to scarce, pricey parking permits and limited street space that fills up fast.
Factor in parking, insurance, tax, fuel or charging, and maintenance before you commit to the idea.
For many residents the honest calculation is that a car earns its keep only for specific needs, which is worth weighing against occasional rentals or car-share schemes.
If your main use is the odd getaway, the city’s travel agencies and other options may cover it without the year-round expense.
Electric and the Dutch shift
The Netherlands has pushed hard toward electric vehicles, and Amsterdam is dense with charging points, with the city steadily tightening the rules on older, more polluting engines through its low-emission zones.
An EV or hybrid is increasingly the default choice for new buyers here rather than a niche one.
If you plan to keep a car mainly for exploring, think carefully about range and charging for the kind of trips you have in mind – a scenic drive out of the city can be as memorable as any of Amsterdam’s museums and attractions, and having wheels opens up the wider region on a whim.
Making the most of it
Once you have a car it changes what a weekend can hold: the beach at Zandvoort, the polders, or a longer run across the border, none of which are quite as easy by train – though for the city itself, the local tour operators still do it better than any car ever could.
Visiting friends will thank you for the airport runs and the flexibility, and an overnight escape to one of the region’s hotels becomes a spur-of-the-moment plan rather than a project.
