Amsterdam designer Roy Adriaens is drawing attention with his fashion label, Roy Is A Mess. The brand blends aesthetics from cybergoths, glam rock, indie sleaze, and 2000s emo culture.
Adriaens, a self-described dropout from the ArtEZ University of the Arts, launched his brand with accessories in 2024 before expanding into clothing. His designs include 3D-printed bangles, spiked snapback caps, highlighter yellow cowboy boots, and studded eight-inch Pleaser shoes.
Nostalgia and Functional Tech
The label resists today’s uniform shopping trends by drawing inspiration from the alternative fashion styles of ten to fifteen years ago. Adriaens grew up in a small town before moving to Amsterdam, where he found more creative freedom.
His creations often feature unexpected technology, including oversized bangles shaped around iPod shuffles and wedge heels that house working Bluetooth speakers. The designer has had to figure out how to fit internal components like batteries and controls into his footwear to make them functional.
Gaining International Attention
Artists such as Ashnikko and Theodora have worn pieces from the label. Adriaens, who previously worked as a chef, continues to develop the brand’s maximalist look from Amsterdam.
