A fifth heatwave is heading toward the Netherlands this week, bringing a return to tropical temperatures after a brief period of milder weather.
A temporary dip in conditions early in the week will keep temperatures close to average, but weather models show high heat returning on Wednesday. Thermometers in southeastern parts of the country are projected to reach 35 degrees Celsius or higher on Thursday.
Heat warnings expected
The national weather institute, KNMI, expects to issue official heat warnings for Thursday and Friday as the extreme conditions set in.
Temperatures around 20 to 26 degrees Celsius earlier in the week align with seasonal norms, but the warm air will shift northern conditions rapidly mid-week.
The sustained high temperatures mean the southeast will meet the official criteria for a heatwave, which requires five consecutive days above 25 degrees, including three days over 30 degrees.
Relief expected by Sunday
The recurring dry weather and heat continue to impact the country, placing renewed strain on local environment and infrastructure across Amsterdam’s urban trees and parks.
By Saturday, forecasters expect a higher chance of rain and localized thunderstorms across the country. Lower temperatures are forecasted to arrive by Sunday, bringing an end to the brief period of intense heat.
