A thatched-roof villa in Amstelveen belonging to former Dutch international footballer Gregory van der Wiel is set to be sold at a public auction following a court order.

The move comes after a five-month grace period granted by an Amsterdam court earlier this year expired without a financial resolution between the 37-year-old former right-back and his creditor.

Dispute over personal loan

In the summer of 2022, Van der Wiel took out an €850,000 loan with an annual interest rate of 12 percent, intending to use the funds for high-yield investments.

After securing a second mortgage on his Amstelveen house and a separate apartment in 2024, he defaulted on the repayment terms, prompting the lender to initiate legal proceedings to recover the debt through a forced sale.

Auction preparations move forward

A large sign has now been placed outside the home to announce the upcoming sale publicly.

Representatives handling the auction noted that because full cooperation from the property owner remains uncertain, legal provisions have been invoked allowing prospective buyers to inspect the interior of the home prior to bidding, with locksmiths on standby if necessary.

Unless the outstanding debt is settled before bidding opens, the property will proceed to auction as scheduled.
