Residents in the Kinkerbuurt are continuing their campaign against a planned longstay hotel, despite a Council of State ruling last month that gave the project the green light.
Local neighbours have staged protests and fought legal battles against the development since 2014 under the slogan “long stay no way”.
Operating licence and rental rules
Opponents are now focusing on the operating permit that the hotel still needs before it can open. Local resident Margot Nieuwenhuis said neighbours plan to organise and submit objections against this remaining licence.
Residents also argue that proposed national rental legislation could alter the financial viability of the site.
Under the draft rules, stays without tenancy protections would be limited to one month, which resident Henk van Dijk notes would effectively turn the project into 55 small homes subject to points-based rent caps rather than hotel rates.
The national legislative proposal has not yet been voted on and may still be amended before becoming law.
Dispute over construction timeline
Following the court ruling, the developer told local media that construction is expected to start next year.
Neighbours dispute that timeline, pointing out that the initial legal battle took fourteen years to conclude. They expect further delays and public opposition as the project moves ahead.
