A new wave of American line dancing has gained a foothold in Amsterdam, with weekend dance sessions regularly selling out. Texas native Riley McGann launched the classes about a year ago after noticing a resurgence of the dance style during a visit back home.

The morning events are hosted at the comedy venue Boom Chicago on the Rozengracht, drawing participants from across the Netherlands, including dedicated dancers traveling from as far as Friesland.

A modern twist on a classic dance

While traditional line dancing is closely tied to classic country music, the local sessions update the format. The instruction features faster footwork, higher intensity routines, and music that strays from traditional country arrangements.

Organizers say the updated style has helped change local perceptions of country culture, which was previously seen as a niche interest in the Netherlands.

Expanding across local venues

The success of the weekend sessions at Boom Chicago has sparked wider interest across the city. Other dance organizers and nightlife venues in Amsterdam have recently started hosting their own country-themed social dance nights.

McGann’s classes continue to sell out regularly as the mix of modern music and group choreography attracts a younger crowd to the dance floor.
