Stadsherstel Amsterdam is organizing several activities this month to support the restoration of the Vondelkerk, which was heavily damaged by a fire on New Year’s Day.
As part of the initiative, the Amstelkerk is hosting a free exhibition and sale titled ‘Vondelkerk in Vuur en Vlam’ during office hours.
Created by former tenant Bas Lubberhuizen and artist Roi Licher, the show features photos and metal artwork related to the building, including drawings made by Licher using charred wood from the fire.
Lectures and walking routes
Visitors can pick up a free self-guided walking route that leads from the Amstelkerk to the Vondelkerk past historic sites connected to architect Pierre Cuypers.
On Monday, August 17, project leader Paul Morel will give a talk detailing recovery efforts undertaken since January and outlining plans leading up to the expected reopening in 2028.
Architectural historian Coert Peter Krabbe will also deliver a lecture on August 24 focusing on the significance of Cuypers’ work. Commemorative items, including a limited-edition pendant made from salvaged church wood, are currently available at the Stadsherstel shop on Reguliersgracht.
