Major construction work is set to begin at Weesp train station this August to widen walking paths and resolve serious bottleneck issues on its platforms.
Railway infrastructure manager ProRail expects daily passenger numbers at the station to jump from 20,000 to 30,000 over the next 15 years.
Current bottlenecks create safety risks
Existing platforms are frequently congested during peak commuting hours, particularly around staircases, elevators, and waiting areas.
Narrow passageways caused by structural columns and outdated station furniture have regularly led to long queues and unsafe crowding near the tracks.
To fix the issue, crews will alter the platform canopy and replace several load-bearing support columns.
positioning these new columns further back will clear up floor space, allowing passengers to move around much more freely.
Upgrades and temporary seat reductions
The redesign also includes modernizing the enclosed waiting rooms and installing updated platform benches.
Travelers should expect fewer seating options throughout the construction period as older furniture is gradually removed and replaced.
Upcoming service disruptions and timeline
The heavy structural work will cause two full service closures at the station this autumn.
No trains will run to or from Weesp between September 11 and September 14 while columns on platforms 1 and 2 are replaced.
A second total closure will take place from October 16 to October 19 to swap out the support columns on platforms 5 and 6.
Final finishing work across the entire station will continue well after the autumn closures, with completion projected for early 2027.
