Finding a Gym in Amsterdam

guide-98129

The gym you join in Amsterdam matters less than the contract you sign and the distance you have to cycle in February.

Gyms to try first

These six are deliberately not the same kind of building: a premium club with tennis courts, a branch that never shuts, a municipal multi-sport hall, a combat gym, a women-only floor and a cycling studio.

Check the hours before you commit, because one of them is closed every weekend and another is open at four in the morning.

David Lloyd Amsterdam

Overtoom 557 buys you the largest operation on this list, a members’ club with tennis courts beside the gym floor and doors open from six in the morning until eleven at night on weekdays.

Weekends close earlier, at eight, and its 2,273 reviews are more than any other gym in the city has gathered.

Anytime Fitness Zuidas

Four in the morning is not a problem at the Zuidas branch, which runs twenty-four hours a day and 365 days a year from Wijenburg.

Boxing and kickboxing are taught alongside the gym floor, trainer support is part of the membership, and 453 reviews put it at 4.8.

Sportcentrum Ookmeer

Ookmeer is the municipal end of the scale, a Nieuw-West complex with a sports hall, an indoor athletics hall and a turn hall built for top-level gymnastics.

Its hours are weekdays only, eight until six, so it is no use to you on a Saturday however many of its 731 reviews say otherwise.

Kops Gym

Kickboxing, boxing and wrestling are taught alongside ordinary fitness training at Kops Gym on the Weesperzijde in Oost.

Ten in the morning to ten at night is the weekday pattern, Saturdays finish at four and Sundays are closed altogether, on 155 reviews at 4.8.

FemmeGym West (de Garage)

Women only, with a sauna attached, on Vancouverstraat in Oud-West.

The floor runs seven in the morning to ten at night on weekdays and mornings until four at weekends, and 185 reviews stand behind it at 4.8.

Wattworks Amsterdam Westerpark

Indoor cycling and nothing else fills the timetable at Wattworks on the Van Hallstraat, which is filed as a cycling club as much as a gym.

Half past seven until nine at night from Monday to Thursday, a seven o’clock finish on Friday, nine to five at weekends, and 98 reviews at a flat five stars.

What the market looks like

The budget end is dominated by national chains with branches every few tram stops, and their appeal is price, long hours and the ability to use any branch in the country.

At the top sit two full clubs: David Lloyd Amsterdam on the Overtoom, which adds tennis courts and is the busiest fitness address in the city at 2,273 reviews, and Clubsportive on the Zuidas, with a 2,500-square-metre floor, a sauna and a twenty-five-metre pool.

Between them sits the part of the market Amsterdam does best: small independent studios built around one thing, where the coach knows your name and the price reflects that.

The municipal option almost nobody mentions

The city runs large sports centres that are open to the public and considerably cheaper than any commercial club.

Sportcentrum Ookmeer on Dokter Meurerlaan in Nieuw-West has a sports hall and an indoor athletics track, Sportcentrum Caland covers the same ground further south, and Friendship Sports Centre in Noord adds a pool.

Sportpark de Eendracht on Bok de Korverweg is the outdoor equivalent, and between them these four cover most of what a commercial club charges a premium for.

Read the contract before the timetable

Dutch gym memberships (abonnementen) usually run for a fixed first year and then renew automatically, and cancelling (opzeggen) needs written notice.

The protection worth knowing is that once that first term has rolled over, Dutch law lets you cancel a silently renewed subscription at any time with no more than one month’s notice, whatever the gym’s own website implies.

Watch the billing period as well, because a price quoted per four weeks means thirteen payments a year rather than twelve, and that is a month’s fee most people never notice paying.

Ask for a trial day or week and use it at the hour you would actually train, since a gym that is empty at eleven in the morning can be unusable at six in the evening.

If a gym floor is not the point

Bouldering has become one of the city’s default indoor sports, and Monk bouldergym on Aambeeldstraat in Noord is the biggest of them, with a bar and a shop attached and nearly a thousand reviews.

CrossFit runs beyond the box in the list above at CrossFit Zeeburg on the Cruquiusweg in Oost, which holds 4.9 across 152 reviews.

Reformer Pilates has arrived in force, and PILAT3S on the Ceintuurbaan is the De Pijp option.

Padel has taken over the courts that used to sit empty, at Padeldam on Tom Schreursweg and XNRGY Club in Zuidoost, which pairs it with a gym.

Women-only training exists too: FemmeGym West on Vancouverstraat runs a gym and sauna for women, at 4.8 from 185 reviews.

Choosing, honestly

The gym within fifteen minutes of home or work is the one you will still be using in March, and that outranks every other consideration on this page.

Decide first whether you want equipment, instruction or company, because a studio that provides the third rarely has the best of the first.

Then check the class timetable against your actual week rather than your intended one.
