What the Waterlooplein market is
The Waterlooplein market is the oldest flea market in the Netherlands, with about 300 stalls.
It is in the former Jewish quarter of Amsterdam, and it became a daily market in 1885.
Every stall is different, which is the point: you come here to search.
Opening hours
The market is open Monday to Saturday.
It does not trade on Sundays.
Where it is
The market fills the Waterlooplein square, postcode 1011 NZ, right beside the city hall and opera building.
The Rembrandt House Museum, the Dutch National Opera and Ballet and the river Amstel are all next to it.
Our guide to Amsterdam’s main squares and the directory of museums help plan the rest of the day.
What to buy and eat
Expect second-hand clothes, antiques, knick-knacks, souvenirs, bicycle parts, jewellery and electronics.
Collectors come for vintage cameras and second-hand books, and there is plenty of vintage clothing, including coats and boots.
Food trucks sell Italian, Lebanese and Greek snacks.
Tips for your visit
On Fridays and Saturdays, the Versmarkt at Amstel1 runs inside the Stopera building on the same square.
For more second-hand shopping, read our guide to vintage furniture and kringloop shops and browse the directory of second-hand and vintage shops.
