A significant number of bridges across Noord-Holland will require major maintenance or complete replacement in the coming years due to aging infrastructure.
National road authority Rijkswaterstaat manages several key crossings in and around the region, including the Schinkelbruggen on the A10 ring road and the Coenbrug on the A8.
While officials confirm these structures remain safe for daily road traffic, many were built decades ago and are reaching the end of their intended operational lifespan.
Impact on waterways
Although heavy freight traffic can still use the road network safely, the situation is already affecting maritime transport on local waterways.
Technical issues and outdated mechanical systems mean that several crossings, such as the Schinkelbruggen and the Schipholbrug on the A9, can no longer open for taller vessels.
This has created immediate blockages for high shipping traffic that relies on these crucial regional water routes.
Funding and priorities
The maintenance push comes at a time when infrastructure budgets are under severe pressure across the Netherlands.
Rising construction costs and limited worker capacity mean that not all necessary repairs can be carried out simultaneously.
Government planners expect to review regional project timelines after the summer to decide which bridge repairs will receive priority funding.
