Regional water authority Waterschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht has installed a temporary wooden barrier in the Muidertrekvaart near Amsterdam to stop saltwater from penetrating vulnerable inland ecosystems and agricultural grounds.
Early in the morning, divers worked alongside crane operators beneath the Penbrug to slot heavy wooden beams into aquatic tracks, taking roughly an hour and a half to extend the structure above the waterline.
Protecting nature reserves
The intervention comes as extended low rainfall depresses freshwater reserves in major bodies like the IJsselmeer, the Markermeer, and surrounding rivers, allowing seawater from the North Sea coast to push further inland.
This issue is part of broader weather patterns that recently left Amsterdam facing warm and dry conditions during extended dry spells.
Saltwater intrusion damages local wildlife, native vegetation, and farming crops that rely heavily on fresh supplies.
By blocking brackish flows from the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, officials ensure that fresh water originating from the IJsselmeer reaches sensitive protected regions such as the Naardermeer, Spiegelplas, and Ankeveense Plassen.
Increasing dry weather measures
Water managers last deployed this specific wooden dam technique in 2022, but they anticipate relying on similar physical barriers more frequently as climate shifts bring recurring dry periods.
Neighboring authorities are facing similar challenges across the region. The Rijnland regional water authority recently installed a comparable wooden barrier in the Leidsevaart at Heemstede for the first time since 2018 to safeguard the bulb-growing district against rising salinity levels.
Impact on local boating
While effective at managing water quality, these emergency structures alter water travel. The barrier in Heemstede has temporarily blocked popular local boat routes, forcing recreational traffic onto detours, and nearby canal locks are operating on restricted schedules to limit saltwater intrusion.
Regional water officials acknowledged that while restricting recreational vessel movements causes temporary inconvenience, preventing severe ecological and agricultural destruction remains the top operational priority during severe dry spells.
