Around 250,000 people across Amsterdam take part in volunteer work, serving as a vital support system for the city.
Among them is Marina, a young resident who has spent the past five years helping out at the local food bank.
She originally joined by chance while searching for a paid job. When none were available, she was entering her thesis period and decided she could manage volunteering once a week.
Early shifts and packing lines
Marina’s shift starts early in the morning. She arrives ready at 7:30 and works until around 13:00.
Her tasks vary from week to week. Some days she works as a driver, while on other days she packs supplies along the assembly line.
Once her duties are finished, she usually stays behind. She often joins the rest of the team for lunch made by chef Ivy.
Connections across the city
What started as a temporary plan during her studies has now stretched across five years.
Marina notes that the social connections are the most rewarding part of her role, especially the chance to meet a wide variety of people, including many local seniors.
She has no plans to step down and intends to keep volunteering at the food bank for as long as she is able.
