Management consultants are hired to help organisations solve problems they cannot, or would rather not, tackle alone – strategy, operations, digital transformation, restructuring and change.

For a company mid-way through a system overhaul, that combination of consulting and delivery under one contract can be a real advantage.
Boutiques and specialists
For many clients a smaller specialist is the better fit.
Boutique consultancies focus tightly – on a single sector, a particular function like supply chain or HR, or a specific kind of transformation – and often deliver more senior attention per euro than a large firm can.
Independent consultants and small partnerships also thrive here, especially for shorter engagements, sometimes working hand in hand with specialist accountants on the financial side.
If your problem is narrow and well-defined, someone who has solved it a hundred times before can easily outperform a large generalist team.
Independents are also more flexible on scope and pricing, and you deal directly with the person doing the thinking rather than a layer of account managers.
The wider advisory network
Consulting rarely happens in isolation.
A restructuring or a transaction quickly pulls in other professionals, from the city’s lawyers and attorneys for the contracts and compliance to specialist advisors on tax and risk.
For deals involving property or formal corporate acts, a notary (notaris) is legally required in the Netherlands, so it helps to line one up early rather than scrambling near a deadline.
Good consultants are used to coordinating with all of these and can help keep the moving parts aligned, so the advice they give does not run ahead of what the law or the numbers will actually allow.
Choosing the right partner
Start by defining the problem before you shop for a firm; the clearer your brief, the better the proposals you will get back.
Ask for relevant experience, meet the people who will actually do the work rather than just the pitch team, and be wary of solutions that arrive before the questions have been properly asked.
Fit and trust matter as much as brand, since you will be working closely with these people through something difficult.
And do not forget the practical protections around any engagement – appropriate insurance and clear contracts keep a working relationship healthy when the stakes are high.
