Urban development writer and Amsterdam-Noord specialist Bas Kok has proposed building a temporary Westbrug across the IJ within three years.
Kok estimates construction would cost between 30 million and 50 million euros, compared to the 650 million to 850 million euros currently forecast for the planned Oostbrug.
He stated that looking for permanent alternatives to the costly Oostbrug is no longer realistic, as that project is already moving forward.
Technology developed in Ukraine
Kok envisions a bridge that would stand for 10 to 15 years using techniques refined in Ukraine to build rapid, heavy-duty spans following the destruction of infrastructure by Russia.
The proposal has been submitted to the municipality for review.
If the city alderperson supports the idea, national waterway authority Rijkswaterstaat must also grant approval.
Kok noted that Rijkswaterstaat could object because large cruise ships currently need passage along the IJ to reach the cruise terminal.
