The fortieth edition of Open Monumentendag takes place this weekend on 12 and 13 September, opening historic buildings across West and Nieuw-West for free visits.
The Vondelkerk is open both days from 10:00 to 17:00, where visitors can see progress on restoration work by Stadsherstel.
Nearby on the WG-terrein, guided tours depart from the Poortgebouw at Helmerplantsoen 1. WG Kunst hosts an exhibition of work by illustrator Charlotte Dematons, while the film Huishoudens van steen screens inside the Poortgebouw at set times across the weekend.
Painted signs and market halls
Werkgroep Historische Gevelreclames Amsterdam is running 45-minute walking tours of restored painted wall advertisements in Oud-West. Tours start from Bellamystraat 378 on both days at 10:00, 12:30, and 15:00.
The 1930s Centrale Markthal on Jan van Galenstraat is also hosting tours of its 70-by-100-metre interior. On Saturday, part of the hall hosts an olive oil festival with tastings, cooking workshops, and music.
Visitors can also tour the studio of synthesizer maker This is not Rocket Science, which is based inside the market hall.
Windmills and social housing
Molen De Otter, a wood-sawing windmill dating to 1631 on Gillis van Ledenberchstraat, is open for climbing and demonstrations by the miller. It opens Saturday from 12:00 to 17:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.
Museum Het Schip on Oostzaanstraat will offer guided tours through the 1919 social housing complex throughout both days.
A Cold War bunker in Westpoort
In Westpoort, the municipal Archeologisch Depot Bornhout opens on Saturday only, from 12:00 to 17:00. The facility stores more than 5,000 crates of excavated items ranging from pottery to metal weaponry.
Visitors can also view an unfinished 1984 nuclear fallout shelter beneath the depot, originally built for municipal machinery staff. Saturday programming there includes afternoon lectures on diseases in Amsterdam and two performances by hardcore punk band Sneurf inside the shelter.
