Repair work on the bridge at the Overtoomse Sluis begins on Wednesday 16 September. The crossing will be closed to cars and trams for more than six months, with work scheduled to finish on 1 May 2027.
The bridge is in poor condition, requiring an emergency structure to be installed in October last year. That structure stopped the bridge from opening for boat traffic.
Work will start by removing the emergency structure so a large bridge segment for the A10 widening project can be transported through the Kostverlorenvaart. Once that piece has passed through, maintenance work will begin.
Access for bikes and public transport
Pedestrians and cyclists can still use the bridge for most of the project. However, from 28 September until 28 February, one side of the bridge will be closed to cyclists at a time, requiring detours via the Kabouterbrug.
From March, pedestrians and cyclists will have normal access across the bridge again.
Tram line 1 will take an altered route to Surinameplein throughout the maintenance period. Stops between Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat and Overtoomse Sluis will not be served, with the tram diverted via Bilderdijkstraat, Kinkerstraat, and Postjesweg towards Hoofdweg.
