Ten neighbourhood initiatives in Amsterdam West will receive money from the Buurt Bespaar Fonds to help residents save energy.

The jury announced the winners on Thursday 8 October at community centre De Havelaar, out of 31 projects that applied.

The fund is run by the city district and Oranje Energie, which links people working on clean, affordable energy.

Jury chair Martien Kuitenbrouwer said the €60,000 went to projects that bring neighbours together and tackle energy poverty in practical ways.

Curtains, solar panels and a battery

Stichting Aminah in Kolenkitbuurt plans to sew insulating curtains with and for local residents.

Buurtkerk Hebron in Spaarndammerbuurt will make its building more sustainable and teach visitors to use less energy.

Pilot studies also won funding, including research into solar panels on tenants’ balconies and whether MidWest could get a neighbourhood battery.

It was Oranje Energie’s fifth neighbourhood fund in the city and its first in West.

The organisation said the fund had never been so oversubscribed, with requests totalling more than €270,000.

If your own energy bills are on your mind, a sensible first step is getting your energy contract right.
