Rental law is the most common reason Amsterdam residents ask the Juridisch Loket, the foundation that helps people with legal questions, for advice.
Almost one in five questions at its Amsterdam branch concerns tenancy, compared with 15.4% nationally.
Tenants often ask about maintenance, landlords ending their lease, and whether a contract can be taken over or continued, for example after a death.
Shared homes and rising costs
Many questions also come from people who share a rented home and worry about where they stand when a housemate moves out.
Legal adviser Jim van Haagen says unclear contracts cause a lot of uncertainty and stress in a city where affordable housing is scarce, and the branch advises people on their rights, their options and how a contract change could affect rent benefit.
Others ask about rent increases they cannot explain or unexpectedly high service-charge bills.
Other questions on the rise
Employment law comes second, with about 17.9% of questions, similar to the national picture.
Questions about family and residence rose from 10.3% in 2024 to 12.2% in 2026, and immigration questions from 6.4% to 10%.
