Neoseum has opened in Lichtstraat inside the Stopera, a new market and meeting place planned by former mayor Eberhard van der Laan, with market stalls, food businesses, shops and workshops.

Visitors wear a virtual reality headset and walk through digital worlds, including ancient Egypt, the Maya world and a planet in the distant future.

The headset scans the real surroundings and reads markers on floors and walls to place visitors in the virtual world.

Digital warnings appear when someone gets close to a wall, while tasks guide them between locations.

Three virtual expeditions

People who go round together see each other as avatars: a pharaoh, an archaeologist or an astronaut.

The three experiences currently on offer are Voyage of the Pharaohs, Mystery of Maya and A Star Odyssey.

A Star Odyssey follows a space journey from a station on Titan to the Trappist-1 system.

The expeditions are open to anyone aged eight and over, last about 20 minutes and cost €17.50. Neoseum is at Waterlooplein 6b.
