The main auditorium at Koninklijk Theater Tuschinski has reopened after a major multi-week renovation project to update seating and restore historic internal features.

Work inside the iconic movie theater began on May 24, timed to take advantage of the quieter summer period between major film premieres and seasonal events.

Crews replaced standard seating with new custom designs and added loveseats in the balcony boxes, while keeping the historic outer balcony seats preserved for architectural character.

Modern upgrades and historic restoration

Workers also reconstructed a historic painting above the entrance to the main auditorium that had disappeared over time.

Lighting throughout the hall was upgraded to energy-efficient LED systems capable of changing colors for special events, though standard movie screenings will maintain traditional dimming settings.

Roughly ten specialized companies and up to forty individual tradespeople - including painters, carpenters, and carpet fitters - worked to complete the layout adjustments without reducing overall audience capacity.

A century of film culture

Located on the Reguliersbreestraat, the venue originally opened in 1921 under Dutch-Polish theater mogul Abraham Tuschinski and is celebrated for its mix of Art Deco, Jugendstil, and Amsterdam School architecture.

The cinema has been operated by theater chain Pathé since 1995, serving as the city’s primary venue for red-carpet film premieres.

It also holds recognition from the European Film Academy as part of its official list of treasures of European film culture, a designation supported by the local municipality through iamsterdam film promotion efforts.
