How to choose a swimming school in Amsterdam

Dutch swimming lessons are built around the Zwem-ABC, a three-diploma program (A, B and C) run to a standard set by the National Swimming Safety Council (NRZ). Diploma A covers basic strokes and getting out of the water in street clothes; diploma C adds open-water and rescue skills, which is the level most Dutch families consider genuinely safe without close supervision.

Because Amsterdam sits among canals and open water, most parents plan for the full A-to-C track rather than stopping at A. Ask a school directly how many lessons run per week, whether the same instructor stays with the group for the whole course, and whether teaching aids like a plank or float are phased out gradually or dropped early.

Many lessons happen at Amsterdam's public pools, so it's worth checking whether a school has its own dedicated teaching pool or shares space at one of the city's public swimming pools. If your child is too young for structured Zwem-ABC lessons, our baby swimming schools directory is the better starting point.

Questions people ask

What is the Zwem-ABC, and why does it matter in Amsterdam?

The Zwem-ABC is the Netherlands' national swimming program, structured around three diplomas set to a standard from the National Swimming Safety Council (NRZ). Diploma A teaches basic strokes and exiting the water in clothing, while diploma C adds open-water and rescue skills. Amsterdam's canals and nearby open water are the reason most Dutch families continue through to diploma C rather than stopping at A.

At what age can my child start swimming lessons?

Most schools start structured Zwem-ABC lessons around age 4 to 5, once a child has the coordination the strokes require. If your child is younger, see our guide to baby swimming schools in Amsterdam for water-familiarization options instead.

How long does it take to earn all three diplomas?

At two lessons a week, going from diploma A through to diploma C typically takes around 14 months. Attending once a week roughly doubles that, while accelerated "turbo" courses can compress the process to a matter of weeks for children who are already close to ready. Ask any school for its own pace, since group availability affects the real timeline as much as the program itself.

Do adults take swimming lessons in Amsterdam too?

Yes. Several schools listed here offer private, one-on-one lessons specifically for adults who never learned to swim or want to build confidence in open water, arranged separately from the children's Zwem-ABC track.

Is diploma A enough, or does my child need B and C too?

Diploma A alone is not treated as a safety guarantee. Children who hold only diploma A are still expected to swim under supervision, particularly in open water, and diploma B still calls for supervision; only diploma C reflects survival and self-rescue skills. That is the practical reason most Dutch families continue through to C.

Can I get a faster or more personal course than the standard group class?

Yes. Most schools combine group lessons with private one-on-one instruction and "turbo" courses that compress the A-to-C progression into weeks rather than months, aimed at children already close to diploma level. Ask a specific school whether either option changes the group size or instructor per lesson, since that is where quality differs most.
