Water company Waternet has issued a boil water warning for residents of Elzenhagensingel and several surrounding streets in Amsterdam-Noord due to possible tap water contamination.
The company advises residents to boil their tap water for three minutes before using it for drinking, making tea, coffee, or lemonade, and washing fruits and vegetables.
The advice also applies to brushing teeth and washing dishes. Waternet stated that every resident in the affected area has received a letter with instructions.
Affected streets and health risks
Alongside Elzenhagensingel, the advisory covers Ludovicus Imminkpad, Kees Abspoelstraat, Hardeveldstraat, Jouke Zietsmastraat, Simon van Woerdenstraat, Jan Poytstraat, and Gerrit Bronkepad.
Drinking the potentially contaminated water can cause symptoms including diarrhoea, stomach ache, and nausea. Young children, pregnant people, and the elderly are advised to be particularly careful.
A boil water advisory typically lasts a few days. Waternet will inform residents as soon as tests confirm the tap water is safe to drink again.
