Dutch e-commerce platform Bol has pulled around 20 solar eclipse glasses from its site because the safety standards could not be verified.

The move comes right before a partial solar eclipse expected to be visible across the Netherlands on Wednesday, which triggered a sudden surge in third-party vendors offering viewing equipment.

Stricter rules for protective eyewear

Company representatives noticed an uptick in sellers attempting to alter product details on standard eyewear to frame them as safe for eclipse viewing.

Retailers are not permitted to make unverified protective claims, as eclipse glasses are legally classified as personal protective equipment.

To stop uncertified products from reaching buyers, the platform moved all eclipse glasses into its formal safety glasses category, which mandates strict seller documentation.

Verification requirements for third-party sellers

Listings without immediate, verifiable safety documentation are being systematically blocked from sale until compliance can be confirmed.

Looking directly at the sun during a solar eclipse without proper certification risks permanent retina damage, making certified filters essential for observers.
