Work on the renewal of bridge 108 near De Clercqstraat is moving into a new phase as crews finish placing the foundation piles. The project had been halted in 2023 when the central section of the bridge turned out not to be strong enough, before resuming at the start of this year.
Strengthening the foundation requires drilling dozens of extra supports deep into the ground. Workers have drilled 47 of the 58 planned piles, each reaching 24 metres down, where reinforcement cages are installed and filled with concrete.
The bridge’s wing walls have been demolished, while monumental sections have been removed for restoration. Once the final 11 foundation piles are drilled, workers will begin rebuilding the crossing.
Disruption for local traffic and shops
The construction site has cut off bridge access for cars and trams. Cyclists and pedestrians can use a temporary emergency bridge to cross the water.
Nearby residents and business owners face noise and reduced visibility. A local clothing shop owner noted that while the store remains accessible, it has been pushed out of plain sight.
Project manager Mireille Capiau said the work is taking place in a tight, densely populated area with many businesses. If construction stays on schedule, the project is expected to run until early March 2027.
