A conductor on Amsterdam’s line 24 tram has been delighting passengers by singing classic local songs as the vehicle makes its way through the city.

The musical performance was highlighted by local resident Ineke de Hoog, who shared her experience of riding the public transit route operated by municipal transport agency GVB.

Boarding at Koningsplein on her way to Amsterdam UMC’s location VUmc site, de Hoog stepped into a crowded tram filled with tourists and local commuters.

Before the vehicle doors even closed, the conductor launched into a spirited rendition of Wim Sonneveld’s legendary anthem, “Aan de Amsterdamse grachten.”

Classic hits along the southern route

The musical journey continued seamlessly alongside the physical stops.

As the tram reached the Keizersgracht and headed toward Leidseplein, the conductor sang Willy Walden’s signature tune, “Als op het Leidseplein de lichtjes weer eens branden gaan,” quickly followed by the traditional tavern song “Een pikketanussie.”

Many international visitors applauded the impromptu concert before stepping off near major cultural stops like the Stedelijk Museum. Local residents on board maintained a classic stoic composure, though the conductor did not let up as the journey continued toward Zuid.

Custom lyrics for city stops

Demonstrating some creative flexibility, the conductor adapted famous melodies to fit specific locations. At Roelof Hartplein, he improvised custom lyrics to the tune of “Oh Waterlooplein,” singing “Oh Roelof Hartplein” instead.

Turning down Beethovenstraat toward Minervaplein, the ride concluded with cheerful renditions of “Geef mij maar Amsterdam” and “Tulpen uit Amsterdam.” Passengers leaving the vehicle were left with an unusually bright start to their day as they arrived at their destinations.
